Established in 1857 on a hill overlooking the confluence of Rome's rivers, Myrtle Hill Cemetery holds the remains of more than 20,000 people and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its most famous grave is that of Ellen Axson Wilson, First Lady of the United States and first wife of President Woodrow Wilson, who was buried among her Rome family after her death in 1914. A dedicated Confederate section contains the graves of several hundred soldiers, alongside monuments to Confederate veterans and to the women of the Confederacy.
