Established in 1837 along what is now Riverside Drive, Oak Hill was Rome's first public burial ground and is sometimes called the Old Seventh Avenue Cemetery. It takes its association from Congressman John H. Lumpkin, a Georgia legislator and U.S. Representative who died in 1860 and was buried here. During 1863 and 1864 the cemetery received 269 Confederate soldiers, and a dedicated section honors these dead, with every state of the Confederacy said to be represented among them.
