Emmanuel University began in 1919 as the Franklin Springs Institute, founded by Pentecostal Holiness minister George Floyd Taylor on 87 acres bought around a cluster of free-flowing mineral springs, complete with two aging hotels, a skating rink, and summer cottages. It grew into Emmanuel College and, in 2023, Emmanuel University, home to the NCAA Division II Lions. Emmanuel University opened on January 1, 1919 as the Franklin Springs Institute, founded by the Reverend George Floyd Taylor and affiliated with the International Pentecostal Holiness Church. Beginning with 30 students, the school was renamed Emmanuel College in 1939 and survived a two-year closure during the Great Depression before shifting its focus from a secondary school toward college-level work. On July 10, 2023 it became Emmanuel University, reflecting the expanded programs on its campus in Franklin Springs, Franklin County.
