Atlanta Metropolitan State College opened in September 1974 as Atlanta Junior College, an institution the University System of Georgia's Board of Regents had authorized in 1965 to serve the west side of metropolitan Atlanta, welcoming an initial class of about 504 students. For decades it was the state's only predominantly Black two-year college. It was renamed Atlanta Metropolitan College in 1988, and after being granted state-college status it adopted its present name around 2012, the same period in which it began awarding four-year degrees.
