On July 9, 1864, with the Roswell bridge burned by retreating Confederates, Gen. Kenner Garrard's Union cavalry waded the Chattahoochee at Shallow Ford under fire, then held the south bank until Gen. Newton's Fourth Corps infantry relieved them at dusk.
