The Story
Historic Sylvester Cemetery in East Atlanta dates to the 1860s and was long associated with the Sylvester Baptist Church and the Warren family, prominent local landowners; the surrounding land had earlier been part of the Creek Nation and bordered the old Sandtown Trail. More than 1,400 people are interred here, including roughly 15 Civil War veterans and many leading nineteenth-century residents of East Atlanta. Among its best-known burials is country music pioneer 'Fiddlin' John Carson, whose 1923 recordings are considered among the first commercial country records. The cemetery is today maintained by the volunteer Sylvester Cemetery Foundation.
