The City of Atlanta founded Oakland Cemetery in 1850 on a ridge just east of downtown, first calling it City Cemetery before the name Oakland was adopted in 1872 for its many oaks. Laid out over 48 acres in the Victorian 'rural cemetery' style, it includes distinct African American, Jewish, and Confederate sections and is the resting place of more than 70,000 people, including several Georgia governors, more than twenty Atlanta mayors, and Confederate generals. Its most famous residents are novelist Margaret Mitchell and golfing champion Bobby Jones.
