Peachtree Creek

The Battle of Peachtree Creek was fought on July 20, 1864, in Fulton County just north of Atlanta and was the first major offensive ordered by Lt. Gen. John Bell Hood after he replaced Gen. Joseph E. Johnston in command of the Confederate Army of Tennessee. Hood hoped to strike Maj. Gen. George H. Thomas's Army of the Cumberland while it was divided crossing the creek, but the attack came late in the afternoon after Union troops were already across and entrenched. The Confederate assault was repulsed with heavy casualties and no operational gain, and the Union victory helped set the stage for the Battle of Atlanta two days later.
