The Story
South-View was chartered by the State of Georgia on April 21, 1886, after nine men born into slavery, barred from burying their dead in white-owned cemeteries, organized a cemetery association at Friendship Baptist Church. It is recognized as the oldest African-American nonprofit cemetery corporation in the country. Spread across more than 200 acres southeast of downtown Atlanta, the grounds hold the graves of over 70,000 African Americans, including many prominent figures in the city's history.
