Utoy Creek

The Battle of Utoy Creek was fought August 4-7, 1864, southwest of Atlanta in present-day Fulton County, as Sherman sought to sever the railroads still feeding the besieged city. Union troops of the XXIII and XIV Corps crossed Utoy Creek but were repulsed with heavy losses on August 6 by William B. Bate's Confederate division, whose line had been strengthened overnight with an abatis. The costly failure reinforced Sherman's conclusion that frontal assaults on entrenchments were futile and pushed him toward the wider flanking maneuvers that ultimately forced Atlanta's fall.
