The Story
Cartecay United Methodist Church traces its roots in this Gilmer County community to before 1834, and the congregation received an early burial ground in 1844 through a land grant from Lewis D. Ellington. After that first church was destroyed by fire, a new sanctuary and the present cemetery were established in 1859 on ground donated by Barnett Wilson. The 1859 white frame church still stands beside the graves and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, making this one of the oldest documented church burial sites in the area.
