The Story
The Battle of Adairsville was fought on May 17, 1864, in the Adairsville area of Bartow and Gordon counties during Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. After pulling back from Resaca, Confederate Gen. Joseph E. Johnston used a sharp rearguard action here to slow William T. Sherman's pursuit while he searched for a defensive position and hoped to spring a trap farther south at Cassville. The fighting amounted mostly to daylong skirmishing that allowed Johnston's Army of Tennessee to continue its orderly retreat toward Atlanta.
