The Story
This small burial ground rests on a wooded hillside just south of the New Echota Historic Site, once the capital of the Cherokee Nation. Among its graves are those of Pathkiller, who served as Principal Chief of the Cherokee until his death in 1827 and had earlier been a colonel in the War of 1812, and Harriet Gold Boudinot, the Connecticut-born wife of Cherokee Phoenix editor Elias Boudinot. One unmarked grave is believed to be that of Jerusha Worcester, infant daughter of the missionary Samuel Worcester, whose family lived at New Echota. Reaching the cemetery today requires a short walk up a marked trail from Highway 225.
