The Battle of Resaca, fought May 13-15, 1864 in Gordon and Whitfield counties, was the first major engagement of Union Gen. William T. Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. Confederate Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's Army of Tennessee slowed but could not stop Sherman's advance, and when a Union crossing of the Oostanaula River threatened his railroad line of retreat, Johnston withdrew south on the night of May 15. The two-day fight produced roughly 6,100 combined casualties. In 2000 the state of Georgia purchased about 508 acres of the battlefield, now preserved as the Resaca Battlefield Historic Site.
