The Story
Grady County was created in 1905, and its first courthouse and jail were built in 1908 to designs by architect Alexander Blair, with Walter B. Roddenbery serving as the first chairman of the county commission. That 1908 building anchored Cairo's downtown square for more than seventy years before it was destroyed by fire in 1980. The present Grady County Courthouse was completed in 1985 in the Classical Revival style by the firm of Jinright, Ryan and Lynn, and it remains the centerpiece of the square. Cairo is also remembered as the birthplace of baseball pioneer Jackie Robinson, born in the county in 1919. The courthouse continues to serve as the seat of county government and justice.
