The roots of this cemetery reach back to 1882, when families in the Spence community began gathering for worship beneath a brush arbor. In 1888 Tharpe and Rebecca Spence deeded land for a church and burial ground, and Rebecca chose the name Macedonia; an additional acre was added in 1905. The site predates the 1906 creation of Grady County, which was carved out of what had been Thomas County.
