The seminary was incorporated in 1837, and after the original 1838 schoolhouse burned, the present brick building was raised between 1853 and 1855 in partnership with the Lawrenceville Masonic Lodge, which met on the ground floor while classes were held above. Threatened with demolition in the early 1970s, the building was saved by local preservationists and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, then restored in 1974 to open as the county history museum.
