The Story
One of the oldest public burial grounds in Gwinnett County, the Lawrenceville Historic Cemetery lies a few blocks from the downtown square and holds the graves of several of the county's founding figures, including William Maltbie and Elisha Winn, as well as John Clay Smith, Lawrenceville's first mayor. Among the earliest interments is Nathan Spence, a Revolutionary War veteran who lived from 1743 to 1833, and the grounds also contain the graves of Confederate soldiers, only a few of whom have marked headstones. Numerous unmarked graves, including those of African Americans not yet fully identified, reflect the site's long service to the community.
