The Story
Sugar Hill Historic Cemetery, also known historically as the First Baptist Church Cemetery, was established in 1886, more than half a century before the city of Sugar Hill was incorporated in 1939. Many of the founding families of the Sugar Hill and Buford communities in Gwinnett County are buried here, and the grounds remain an active burial site. A city-led preservation project used ground-penetrating radar to locate roughly two dozen unmarked graves believed to hold enslaved African Americans, along with a separate cluster of about twenty unmarked pauper burials, and officials have worked to place markers memorializing these previously forgotten interments.
