Old Clarkesville Cemetery (Cemetery)

The Old Clarkesville Cemetery in Habersham County sits on land donated by Colonel James Brannon in 1831, and a Methodist church once stood at its center until roughly 1881. Among those buried here are U.S. Congressman Richard Habersham, a nephew of Postmaster General Joseph Habersham, and Jarvis Van Buren, a cousin of President Martin Van Buren who came south from New York to run the local iron works. The grounds also hold Revolutionary War veterans and a section of African American graves, including people who had been enslaved in the county. Known for its towering hemlocks, the cemetery is cared for today by the volunteer nonprofit Historic Clarkesville Cemetery Preservation, Inc.
