Brenau University traces its roots to 1878, when it opened in Gainesville as the Georgia Baptist Female Seminary. In 1900 president H. J. Pearce gave the school the coined name "Brenau," blending the German brennen ("to burn") with the Latin aurum ("gold"). The historic Gainesville campus remains home to Brenau's Women's College, which today operates alongside coeducational undergraduate and graduate schools.
