Bethel Baptist Church was founded in 1802 at a site about three and a half miles from Sparta on Shoals Road before relocating here in 1828, when John S. Latimer deeded the land as a place of divine worship and a burying ground. Early records show the congregation was roughly one-third African American, and some Black members are thought to have been buried at the rear of the cemetery before 1868, the year they left to organize the nearby Hickory Grove Church.
