The Story
Mt. Zion Methodist Church in rural Hancock County traces its origins to about 1816, making it one of the oldest congregations in the area, and its burial ground holds tombstones dated as early as 1796 along with numerous older unmarked graves. A weatherboard meeting house standing on the site witnessed the movement of Union and Confederate troops during the 1864 campaign between Atlanta and Jonesboro. Today the historic cemetery, one of the oldest in Hancock County, is maintained by the Hancock County Foundation for Historic Preservation.
