The Story
Haralson County's first courthouse was a wooden building erected in 1856 at the center of Buchanan's public square for about $5,000, and it was damaged by fire in 1888. The county resolved in January 1891 to replace it, and the historic courthouse that stands today was completed in 1891-1892 in the Queen Anne style, designed by the Atlanta firm of Bruce and Morgan and distinguished by its square and round corner towers and clock tower. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 7, 1974. The building served the county until 1972, when a newer courthouse less than a mile away took over its functions. The old landmark now operates as a museum and home of the Haralson County Historical Society on the Buchanan square.
