The couple deeded the property to the nonprofit Ida Cason Callaway Foundation, and the gardens opened to the public in 1952 to promote and protect the area's native flora. Today the property spans thousands of acres and features the Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center, the Virginia Hand Callaway Discovery Center, woodland trails, and lakes.
