The Story
Despite the "Civil War" name posted at its gate, this Reed Creek-district burial ground actually began as the graveyard of the long-vanished Mount Vernon Baptist Church. According to local documentation, the cemetery has no established connection to the Civil War, and the renaming sign was erected without authority. The "Cole" in its name comes from the Rev. F. M. Cole, who pastored the old church rather than founding the cemetery itself. With fewer than forty recorded graves, it stands as one of the smaller historic church burial grounds in Hart County.
