Big Buckhead Cemetery

Big Buckhead takes its name from nearby Buckhead Creek, and the Baptist congregation here traces its roots to before the American Revolution, when the church is thought to have been gathered by minister Matthew Moore. It was formally reconstituted in September 1787, and over the following decades four successive meeting houses stood on or near the site, progressing from an early log structure to a frame building in 1807 and a brick one in 1830. The grounds are historically significant as the place where the Hephzibah Association was organized and where the idea of founding Mercer University was first proposed. The old burying ground lies across the road from the church in a wooded setting.
