The Battle of Griswoldville, fought November 22, 1864, in Jones County, was the only major infantry engagement of Sherman's March to the Sea. After Union troops destroyed the factory town of Griswoldville, an inexperienced Georgia militia force attacked the veteran brigade of Brig. Gen. Charles Walcutt and was thrown back after three determined charges. The lopsided Confederate defeat cost the militia roughly 500 casualties to about 100 for the Union, and Federal soldiers were struck to find many of the fallen were old men and boys; the ground is now preserved as a Georgia state historic site.
