The Story
Jarrell Plantation State Historic Site near Juliette in Jones County preserves a middle-class cotton farm worked by the Jarrell family for more than 140 years. John Fitz Jarrell built the first house in 1847, and by 1860 the roughly 660-acre farm was worked by 39 enslaved people; it survived the Civil War, Sherman's March to the Sea, and Reconstruction. His son Benjamin 'Dick' Jarrell later industrialized the operation with a steam-powered sawmill, cotton gin, gristmill, and other machinery, and in 1974 the family donated the buildings and artifacts to the State of Georgia. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
