GeorgiaThe Jones County Courthouse in Gray was built in 1906 in the Romanesque Revival style to a design by prolific Georgia courthouse architect J. W. Golucke, laid out on a cross plan with corner turrets and a three-stage clock tower topped by an open belvedere. It rose only after the county seat had shifted from old Clinton to Gray, so the county's dramatic Civil War history predates this building. In July 1864 Union general George Stoneman's cavalry raid swept through Jones County and Clinton, wrecking railroad facilities and pillaging homes, before Stoneman was cornered and captured with hundreds of his men at nearby Sunshine Church by Confederate cavalry under Alfred Iverson Jr. That November, fighting also reached Griswoldville in the county during Sherman's March to the Sea. Inside the courthouse, pressed-metal ceilings adorn the rotunda and courtroom; the building was added to the National Register on September 18, 1980, and rehabilitated in 1992.
