Confederate Cemetery (Cemetery)

The Confederate Cemetery near Milner is the resting place of soldiers who were wounded defending Atlanta against General Sherman's advance and died at an improvised Confederate hospital in the town, to which the injured were evacuated by rail after the battles of Atlanta and Jonesboro in 1864. Local physicians, including Dr. John F. Hunt, cared for the men, and those who did not survive were buried in a cemetery about a mile from town off Liberty Hill Road. A Georgia Historical Commission marker was erected at the site in 1955, and the Willie Hunt Smith Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy later worked to identify the graves and replace the original fieldstone markers with inscribed headstones.
