Gordon State College traces its origins to an 1832 frame schoolhouse in Barnesville and was incorporated by the Georgia General Assembly in 1852 as the Barnesville Male and Female High School. In 1872 it was renamed Gordon Institute in honor of General John B. Gordon, and beginning in 1890 it operated a military department that made it a noted military school for roughly eighty years. The institution joined the University System of Georgia on July 1, 1972, as Gordon Junior College, was designated a state college in 2006, and took the name Gordon State College in 2012.
