The Story
Greenwood Cemetery is Barnesville's principal municipal burying ground and one of the largest cemeteries in Lamar County, with nearly 4,800 documented interments. Its most notable resident is Thomas Jefferson Speer (1837-1872), a Barnesville merchant who won election to the U.S. House of Representatives and died while still serving his term in Congress. The grounds sit within a short walk of the town's Old Soldiers and Zebulon Street cemeteries, forming a cluster of historic Barnesville burial sites.
