The Story
Lanier County was created in 1919 with Lakeland as its seat, and the community named itself and the county for the Georgia poet Sidney Lanier. The first courthouse was built in Lakeland in 1921, and the present one-story brick and concrete courthouse, in a plain mid-century modern idiom, replaced that earlier building in the early 1970s. The courthouse is not listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The county's one NRHP-listed public building is instead the nearby Lanier County Auditorium and Grammar School of 1925, a reminder that the county's most cherished landmarks lie just off the courthouse square.
