The Story
Greenwood Baptist Church Cemetery surrounds one of Georgia's oldest surviving rural churches. The congregation traces to 1784, when it was constituted in Wilkes County as Upton Creek Baptist Church, an early offshoot of Daniel Marshall's Kiokee Baptist, the first Baptist church in the state. After two relocations it settled permanently in the Amity community by 1812, and the present sanctuary, built of hand-hewn longleaf pine, was completed in 1816 and still stands. It is regarded as the sixth-oldest Baptist congregation in Georgia.
