The Story
Redland Cemetery, also recorded as the Old Redland (Black) Cemetery, is the historically African American burial ground of the Redland and Ousley community in western Lowndes County. It sits directly beside the McIntyre Family Cemetery, which was known as the Old Redland (White) Cemetery, so the two adjoining grounds together preserve the racial separation that governed even burial in the rural Jim Crow-era South. The site along Knight's Ferry Road contains roughly 140 recorded graves.
