History
Valdosta State University originated in 1906 legislation that established the South Georgia State Normal College, though the school did not open until January 1913, when it offered a two-year teacher-training program for women. In 1922 it became a four-year college and was renamed Georgia State Womens College, later evolving into the coeducational regional university it is today. Its oldest building, West Hall, was completed in 1917 and is known for its dome and Spanish-mission architecture.
