The Dahlonega Gold Museum State Historic Site occupies the Old Lumpkin County Courthouse, built in 1836 and the oldest surviving courthouse in Georgia, at the center of the Dahlonega town square. The museum interprets America's first major gold rush, which drew thousands of prospectors into the north Georgia mountains beginning around 1828, roughly two decades before the California rush. Between 1838 and 1861 a U.S. Branch Mint at Dahlonega struck more than $6 million in gold coins, and the museum displays rare Dahlonega-minted coins and gold nuggets.
