GeorgiaThe McIntosh County Courthouse in Darien was built in 1872, replacing an earlier courthouse burned during the Civil War, and has survived several later fires, with a remodeling after a 1931 fire by architect A. F. Comer and additions in 1973 and 1980. In the summer of 1899 the courthouse and its adjacent county jail were the center of the Darien Insurrection, when members of the Black community assembled to prevent the lynching of Henry Delegal, who had been jailed on an accusation many believed false. The collective stand succeeded in keeping Delegal from the mob, but it brought swift reprisals from white authorities, with arrests, militia deployment, and prosecutions of the Black defenders, and the episode became a widely cited example of organized Black resistance to lynching in coastal Georgia. The events are documented in histories of McIntosh County and of the region's Reconstruction- and Jim Crow-era race relations. The courthouse remains the seat of one of Georgia's oldest coastal counties.
