Upper Mill Cemetery draws its name from a lumber mill that once stood on Cathead Creek near Darien. Now a single city-maintained ground, it was originally three adjoining cemeteries: one used chiefly to bury enslaved people from nearby Butler Island, another belonging to a white Presbyterian congregation, and a third run by the town. Many of its unmarked graves are believed to hold African Americans from that earliest section.
