The Story
Known variously as Ollie Branch or Old Saint Marks Cemetery, this early burying ground sits in the woods behind the newer St. Marks cemetery in northern Meriwether County. It took shape around the Olive Branch Chapel and campground, where the Rev. Willis D. Matthews preached in the 1840s, and the chapel's stone foundation still survives alongside several weathered tombs whose inscriptions have largely worn away. One of the oldest monuments is thought to mark the grave of Nancy Matthews, the minister's mother.
