The Story
The Chief Vann House, a two-story brick mansion near Chatsworth in Murray County, was completed in 1804 for the Cherokee leader and planter James Vann and is often called the "Showplace of the Cherokee Nation." Vann built one of the largest plantations in the Cherokee Nation and brought Moravian missionaries in to establish a school nearby; after he was killed in 1809 the house passed to his son Joseph, a Cherokee statesman. The Vann family was forced from the property during the Cherokee removal of the 1830s. The restored house, noted for its carved woodwork and cantilevered "floating" staircase, is now a Georgia state historic site on the National Register of Historic Places.
