Linwood Cemetery dates to 1828, when the surveyor laying out the new city of Columbus set aside the ground to bury his young son, making it part of the town's original plan. Around 200 Confederate soldiers rest here, and the cemetery is the burial place of notable Georgians including John S. Pemberton, the pharmacist who invented Coca-Cola, and Confederate general Henry L. Benning, the namesake of Fort Benning. Originally called the City Cemetery, it was renamed Linwood in 1894 after the surrounding neighborhood.
