That older courthouse is one of Georgia's most recognizable town-square buildings and a frequent filming location, standing in for towns from The Dukes of Hazzard to In the Heat of the Night and The Vampire Diaries. Covington's square also had a rougher past: the county's turn-of-the-century jail nearby was fitted with a gallows room and trap door for legal hangings, though no execution is recorded there before Georgia shifted capital punishment to electrocution at the state prison in 1924. The historic courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
