The Battle of Dallas was fought May 26 to June 1, 1864, in Paulding County during the Atlanta Campaign, as Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman maneuvered his armies around Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's Confederate defenses west of the Western & Atlantic Railroad. It was the last of three closely linked engagements in the area, following New Hope Church (May 25) and Pickett's Mill (May 27). On May 28, Lt. Gen. William J. Hardee's Confederate corps probed the entrenched Union lines held by Maj. Gen. John A. Logan near Dallas; the assault was repulsed with heavy losses on both sides before Sherman resumed his flanking march toward Atlanta.
