The Battle of New Hope Church was fought May 25-26, 1864, in Paulding County during Sherman's Atlanta Campaign, when Union Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker's XX Corps assaulted entrenched Confederates under Maj. Gen. Alexander P. Stewart near the crossroads of Dallas. Advancing over rough, wooded ground, the Federals were repulsed with heavy losses in front of the Confederate earthworks, and Hooker's men dubbed the killing ground the 'Hell Hole.' It was the first of three engagements fought in close proximity over four days, followed by Pickett's Mill on May 27 and Dallas on May 28.
