The Story

This Cherokee-marble shaft honoring Georgia founder James Oglethorpe was dedicated in 1930 by marble magnate Sam Tate. Originally atop Mount Oglethorpe, once the Appalachian Trail's southern terminus, it was moved to Jasper in 1999.
