The Story
Greenwood Cemetery is one of Cuthbert's principal burial grounds, holding well over 900 recorded graves. Its most notable resident is Fletcher "Smack" Henderson (1897-1952), the Cuthbert-born pianist, bandleader, and arranger whose charts helped shape the big-band swing sound of the 1930s. The grounds also include a row of Confederate veterans, a reminder of the county's Civil War-era generation. Together these burials make the cemetery a small but meaningful landmark in Randolph County's history.
