The Story
Magnolia Cemetery was established by the Augusta City Council in 1818 as the municipal City Cemetery, laid out on former plantation and brickyard land once owned by French emigre Nicholas de L'Aigle. Spanning more than 60 acres, it grew into one of Georgia's most important historic burial grounds, with distinct Jewish and Greek sections and, by tradition, one of the oldest trees in the state. Seven Confederate generals are buried here, among them artillery commander Edward Porter Alexander, whose guns bombarded Cemetery Ridge at Gettysburg, along with Goode Bryan, John King Jackson, William Duncan Smith and Marcellus A. Stovall.
