It was established in 1985 by newspaper publisher William S. Morris III in memory of his parents, and in 1989 he acquired some 230 works from Southern-art collector Robert P. Coggins to seed the collection; the museum opened to the public in September 1992. Its holdings now exceed 5,000 objects, ranging from the eighteenth-century natural-history watercolors of John Abbot to nineteenth-century landscapes by Henry Ossawa Tanner and Joseph Rusling Meeker, and a commissioned work by Robert Rauschenberg incorporating images of Augusta. Alongside its permanent survey of Southern painting, the Morris presents changing exhibitions, concerts, and education programs.
